The Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights was founded in 1976 and is the first human rights organization in the Arab world. It has a wide geographic presence across the country, with 31 regional branches, making it one of the most extensive civil society networks in Tunisia. The League’s role goes beyond defending individual and collective rights and freedoms; it has been a key actor in supporting democratic transition, contributing to political and legislative reforms, and resisting authoritarianism and extremism. It is considered one of the most credible and independent civil society organizations in Tunisia. This prominent role earned it a place among the four organizations of the National Dialogue Quartet, which was awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its leading efforts in building national consensus and safeguarding the democratic process.
